Washington has one of the highest EV adoption rates in the country, and a Level 2 charger at home is what turns an electric car from a mild inconvenience into a genuine upgrade. Here is what to know before booking an EV charger installation.
Level 1 vs Level 2
Level 1 uses a standard 120V outlet and adds roughly 3 to 5 miles of range per hour. Level 2 uses a 240V circuit and adds 20 to 40 miles per hour, fully charging most vehicles overnight.
Hardwired charger or NEMA 14-50 outlet?
A hardwired charger on a dedicated 50 or 60 amp circuit is the most reliable option and is required for chargers set above 40 amps. A NEMA 14-50 outlet is flexible if you want to bring a portable charger between homes, but the outlet must be an industrial-grade model rated for continuous EV load.
Does your panel have room?
A 200 amp panel almost always does. A 100 amp panel often can support a 32 to 40 amp charger after a load calculation, and load-management chargers can share capacity with a dryer or range. If the numbers do not work, a panel upgrade or sub panel is the fix.
Tesla Wall Connector notes
The Tesla Wall Connector and Universal Wall Connector are hardwired, adjustable from 12 to 48 amps, and work well on a 60 amp circuit. We configure the amperage during commissioning so the charger never exceeds what the circuit can deliver.
Detached garages and long runs
Long conduit runs or a detached carport add cost, but they are routine. We size the conductors for voltage drop so the charger delivers full power.
Rebates
