Breaker Keeps Tripping? 7 Causes and When to Call an Emergency Electrician

Overloads are common, but some tripping patterns signal a short, a ground fault or a failing breaker that needs a professional now.

A breaker that trips once is doing its job. A breaker that keeps tripping is telling you something is wrong on that circuit. Here are the seven causes we find most often in Washington homes, roughly in order of how often we see them.

1. Circuit overload

Too many devices on one circuit. Space heaters, hair dryers and microwaves are the usual suspects. If the breaker trips only when several things run together, the fix is a dedicated circuit, not a bigger breaker.

2. Short circuit

A hot wire touching a neutral or ground. The breaker trips instantly, often with a pop. Common in damaged cords, worn outlets and rodent-chewed wiring in attics and crawlspaces.

3. Ground fault

GFCI breakers trip when current leaks to ground, usually from moisture in outdoor outlets, bathrooms or garages.

4. Arc fault

AFCI breakers detect arcing from loose connections or damaged wire. Nuisance trips happen, but repeated AFCI trips often reveal a real loose connection.

5. Loose or backstabbed connections

Push-in outlet connections loosen over decades, causing heat and intermittent trips. This is a common finding during electrical troubleshooting.

6. Failing breaker

Breakers wear out. If a breaker trips under light load and feels warm, or will not reset, replacement is the fix.

7. Panel or service problems

A loose neutral or failing main lug can cause multiple breakers to misbehave and lights to flicker throughout the house. This one is an emergency.

When to call an emergency electrician

Call immediately if the breaker will not reset, you smell burning, the panel is warm, an outlet is sparking, or you have lost power to half the house. In every Washington city we have a 24/7 page with the number ready, such as emergency electrician in Tacoma or emergency electrician in Bellevue.
