An electrical panel upgrade is the most common large electrical project in Washington homes, and the most common question we get about it is simply: what will it cost? The honest answer is that it depends on four things, and once you know them you can predict your quote closely.
1. Amperage and panel size
Most Washington homes built before the 1990s have 100 amp service, and many older homes have 60 amp fuse boxes. Upgrading to a 200 amp panel gives you room for a heat pump, an EV charger, a hot tub or a kitchen remodel without tripping breakers. A 200 amp, 40-space panel is the standard recommendation; going larger rarely makes sense for a single-family home.
2. Whether the service entrance changes
If your existing meter base and service mast are rated for 100 amps, they must be replaced along with the panel. On some homes the underground or overhead service conductors from the utility must also be upsized. This is where quotes can vary the most between houses that look identical from the street.
3. Panel location and relocation
Moving a panel out of a bathroom, closet or cramped space to satisfy current clearance rules adds labor. Relocating the panel entirely means extending every existing circuit, which can add a day of work.
4. Permits, inspection and utility fees
Every panel upgrade in Washington is a permitted job, inspected by Labor & Industries or the local jurisdiction. Some utilities charge a reconnect fee. A reputable electrician includes all of this in a flat price rather than surprising you later.
Signs you need a panel upgrade now
- A Federal Pacific (Stab-Lok), Zinsco or Sylvania panel. These brands have documented failure rates and many insurers will not cover them.
- Breakers that feel warm or trip repeatedly.
- Buzzing, humming or scorch marks at the panel.
- No room for new circuits, or double-tapped breakers.
- You are adding a heat pump, EV charger, hot tub or ADU.
How to get an accurate price
Ask for a flat, written quote after a site visit. Confirm it includes the permit, inspection, utility coordination, whole-house surge protection and labeling.
